On the 50th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge in 1987, San Francisco–based sound art pioneer Bill Fontana debuted his SFMOMA-commissioned Sound Sculptures through the Golden Gate, a live sonic duet between the Golden Gate Bridge and the Farallon Islands. Fontana captured environmental sounds in real time from microphones placed at different points on the bridge,on land, and under water, transmitting them simultaneously to loudspeakers on the facade of the museum’s former building on Van Ness Avenue
