The Clash is the debut studio album by English punk rock band the Clash. It was released on 8 April 1977 through CBS Records. Written and recorded over three weeks in February of 1977 for a paltry £4,000, it would go one to reach on the UK charts, and has been included on many retrospective rankings as one of the greatest punk albums of all time
London Calling, the third album by English rock band The Clash, was released on December 14th, 1979 in the United Kingdom and January of 1980 in the United States. London Calling has impressive subject matter coverage; topics range from racial conflict, unemployment, and drug use to safe sex, the tragic life of actor Montgomery Clift, and social displacement.
The Clash – London Calling. Release date: 14th December 1979. The occasional lapse into white-boy reggae aside, The Clash’s masterpiece was all the better for the fact that it transcended punk. Ska, rockabilly and jazz all sat effortlessly alongside the prescribed three chords on this double album, and if that sounds pretentious on paper, then it sounded irrepressible on vinyl. In August 1979, the band entered Wessex Studios to begin recording London Calling. The Clash asked Guy Stevens to produce the album, much to the dismay of CBS Records, due to his notorious working methods: while recording he would often swing ladders and throw chairs around the group to create an emotional atmosphere. The Clash got along well with Stevens, especially bassist Paul Simonon, who found his work to be very helpful and productive to his playing and their recording as a band.
Clash on Broadway is a fine triple-disc, 63-song box set covering the Clash's entire career. As a result, it's a useful box set even for dedicated fans, presenting the band's evolution in a logical fashion. Nevertheless, compilations don't always suit the Clash well because The Clash and London Calling were powerful individual works in their own right, and hearing them cut up in this fashion alters their impact.
Overall, the ‘Clash On Broadway’ box set is a mammoth. It is worth investigating for several reasons, but most fans of the band need not apply because they will probably own 90%of what is included here.
