Stranger Things is the eleventh solo studio album by the British singer/songwriter Marc Almond. It was released by Blue Star Music, in conjunction with XIII BIS Records, on 18 June 2001. According to an article in Billboard magazine, the sound of Stranger Things "finds a middle ground between the spare gothic synth-pop of Open All Night and the orchestral grandeur of 1991's Tenement Symphony
As a result, Stranger Things falls somewhere in the middle range of Almond albums - it's no disaster, by any means, but it's definitely an album rewarding repeated listenings rather than immediately connecting. Where Open All Night was dark, sly, and desperate, Stranger Things, a few songs aside like the brassy "Dancer" and "When It's Your Time," is dreamy, swoony, and much more subtly involving. Consider the orchestration on "Born to Cry," which turns a fine song into a really great one, a Shirley Bassey-sung spy movie theme for a new century

If the second album by Canada's Bran Van 3000 sounds like the work of a committee of warring prima ballerinas, no wonder. Upwards of 40 musicians contributed their disparate talents, and the outcome is accordingly confused. Songwriter James Di Salvio's role is described on the sleeve as "stuff and lifestyle", which effectively leaves the ship adrift amid the flotsam of 30 years of musical trends. Marc Almond has had an unlucky career, always in the departure lounge for the zeitgeist but never quite boarding. Stranger Things sees him utilising a gaggle of Icelandic songwriters and musicians. Chief collaborator Johann Johannson gives Almond's theatrics a veneer of lush sophistication eschewed since the Willing Sinners period, but has done little to alleviate the worst of Almond's voice. He warbles across Born to Cry as if his vocal cords were hob-nailed.
