Tom Petty was a fan and even toured with them in 1988. Tom Petty remarked on the music video for this song, "I really liked the video to that, one of the only times I've ever felt fulfilled by a video. The song was such a narrative that the video was a piece of cake to make. I even had people coming to me wanting to make it into a movie. Johnny Depp, Faye Dunaway and Tom Petty were featured in the video for this track.

future was wide open (Oh). Into the great wide open Under them skies of blue Out in the great wide open A rebel without a clue Into the great wide open Under them skies of blue Into the great wide open A rebel without a clue (Ayy). About Into the Great Wide Open. One of Petty’s most vivid story songs chronicling the demise of a guitar-toting rebel without a clue who comes to Los Angeles and gets eaten alive by the record industry. That was one of the first ones I wrote for the album. I really liked the video to that, one of the only times I’ve ever felt fulfilled by a video. Lead guitar Mike Campbell (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers). Bass, backing vocals Howie Epstein.

Into the Great Wide Open is the eighth studio album by American rock band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, first released in 1991. The album was the band's last with MCA Records. The album was the second Petty produced with Jeff Lynne after the success of Full Moon Fever. The first single, "Learning to Fly", became the band's joint longest-running No. 1 single (along with "The Waiting" from 1981's Hard Promises) on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, spending six weeks at the top spot

Into the Great Wide Open (song). Into the Great Wide Open" is the third song on the 1991 album Into the Great Wide Open by the group Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The music video for the single, directed by Julien Temple, starred Johnny Depp as the protagonist, Eddie Rebel, as well as Gabrielle Anwar as Eddie's girlfriend and Faye Dunaway as his manager, and featured cameos by Terence Trent D'Arby, Chynna Phillips, and Matt LeBlanc

For the follow-up, Into the Great Wide Open (released 25 years ago today, on July 2, 1991), Petty re-upped with Lynne and reunited the Heartbreakers. The results are about what you'd expect: more retro-minded rock ’n’ roll songs presented with modern sheen and maybe a hair more oomph than fans got on Full Moon Fever. Despite the lack of monster pop singles like Free Fallin’, which became Petty’s calling card, Into the Great Wide Open isn't an inferior sequel

The future was wide open. They moved into a place they both could afford. He found a nightclub he could work at the door. Out in the great wide open, a rebel without a clue.

They moved into a place they both could afford He found a nightclub, he could work at the door She had a guitar and she taught him some chords The sky was the limit. Into the great wide open Under them skies of blue Out in the great wide open A rebel without a clue. The papers said Ed always played from the heart He got an agent and a roadie named Bart They made a record and it went in the charts The sky was the limit.
