The Radio Rats was a South African rock group formed in 1977 in Springs, Gauteng, by Jonathan Handley (lead guitar and background vocals), Dave Davies on lead vocals and Herbie Parkin on bass, with various drummers. Leonard Dixon is remembered as the group's drummer during its most famous period. The Rats", as they are known colloquially, are notable for their 1979 hit "ZX Dan". In 1978, the group recorded a ten-song LP called Into the Night We Slide

Secondly, the glee club in Glee doesn’t actually call themselves The Glee Club. Their actual name is the New Directions. Sure the show is called Glee but The Glee Club isn’t actually used as an actual title. I don’t see how this will actually come to be, there would be far too many people outraged with it but the thought is scary. This band was an offshoot of the incredibly good Radio Rats from Springs, and both starred that genius lyricist Jonathan Handley. This song is from 1997, and was dedicated to Helen Martins from the Owl House, another major talent stuck in a society too small for her creativity. By the way - this band is so under the radar, I couldn’t even find the album cover online. And remember: this isn’t supposed to be exhaustive, or even representative. It’s just a bunch of cds I’ve got lying around in a drawer. handley glee club rats

The Glee Club was an Irish rock band active in the early 1990s. The band formed when vocalist, lyricist Joanne Loughman and guitarist, violinist Hugh O'Carroll left their former band, the Swinging Swine. Influenced by bands such as My Bloody Valentine and the Cocteau Twins, Loughman and O'Carroll, with occasional help from guitarist Kevin Boyle, recorded a demo, which would later be released as a self-titled EP by Setanta Records

One of the early-'90s most promising groups, Ireland's Glee Club only ever made one full album, but that was enough to win it deserved attention. The band itself grew out of a three-piece outfit called the Swinging Swine, which toured its home country quite a bit, gaining a grassroots following as they went. The highly regarded Irish label Setanta came across an early-Glee Club demo tape and offered them a deal, resulting in a self-titled EP surfacing in 1993. For live performances the two then added a fine rhythm section consisting of bassist Magnus Box and drummer Adrian Meehan. Loughman and O'Carroll then decided to re-record and expand on the original EP with this new lineup, resulting in its fantastic 1994 effort Mine, which gained further attention in America when it was licensed by the noted 4AD label.

Notes

This is a very limited release of a Radio Rats (and friends) tape, number three in the Glee Club series. There is no track listing, although there are some 25 songs per side. The cover unfolds into a mini poster with tiny bits of information, such as the label (Radium Wreckords) and its address (PO Box 2888, Benoni, 1500, South Africa, Tel. 018 32274). Recorded at 5 Bacon Road. The Radio Rats were a seminal band from Springs, near Johannesbur, formed in 1977. They had a big hit with ZX Dan, which is on this tape. It's the ultimate DIY product.
