Mantovani, the undisputed King of light orchestral music, makes yet another appearance on Vocalion, this time with his 1961 Decca album Songs of Praise. In partnership with his regular arranger, Cecil Milner, Mantovani produces rich, spellbinding orchestral renditions of hymns such as Nearer my God to Thee, The Holy City, Abide with Me and The Lord's My Shepherd among others. The bizarreness starts with the very fact of Mantovani, the master of British easy listening music (or, as it's called there, light music), doing an album of hymns at the height of his career. Mantovani was completely oriented toward instrumental music, and in 1961 he would seem to have had little to gain by recording tunes that were primarily vehicles for verbal religious sentiments. Each piece works a little differently, but broadly speaking what they do is write counterpoints that set up big contrasts with the tunes themselves.
Mantovani began conducting in 1925, his first position being conductor of the Hotel Metropole Orchestra in Leeds, an ensemble with whom he made several recordings in 1928. Among the more successful works he composed and recorded that year were Impromptu Serenade and Venetian Boatmen's Song. Concurrently he pursued a career as a concert violinist in England, and had achieved considerable success in that endeavor. In 1931 he made the difficult decision to abandon his soloist's career in favor of conducting. Mantovani and his ensemble grew in popularity in the 1940s, not least because the conductor dabbled in many successful theater productions on the side. In 1951, Mantovani, with the aid of arranger and former accordionist in his orchestra Ronald Binge, fashioned the aforementioned "cascading strings" sound, introducing it with one of Mantovani's most popular hits, Charmaine.
The Master Works offers pieces from a number of his films, such as "Devi. Some, like "Aparajito" (from the Apu trilogy), are little more than snippets, but there's plenty of compensation in the epic of "Jalsaghar," which runs over 23 minutes. But while this is Indian film music, it shouldn't be confused with the more populist Bollywood sound.
The Complete Master Works is a two-DVD set by Tenacious D, documenting their gig at the Brixton Academy on November 3, 2002. The DVD also contains the band's short lived HBO TV series, a collection of short films, two documentaries on the band, music videos, and live TV appearances. The video was a major success, going 6 platinum in the US and 2 platinum in Australia in the Video Longform category.
Mantovani's Golden Hits. Mantovani pioneered orchestral pop and these are the '50s hits and classics that made him a worldwide star. His hits Charmaine; Greensleeves; The Moulin Rouge Theme, and Around the World join Moon River; La Vie en Rose, and more! Song Title. If you like to be introduced to Mantovani this is a great album to start with. By no means this is a definitive and the best album of Mantovani but is one of the best from his vast repertoire. I highly recommend this album to anyone who can appreciate wonderful melodies done with a large orchestra. The strings on this album are lush and at the same time very smooth sounding. The recording is also top notch which is the icing on the cake.
