Work Title Litany for the Whale. Date Composed in 1980. Work Length Approximately 12 minutes. Instrumentation Volcalise for two voices. A 'word' is sung in one breath by pronouncing each letter separately and giving the same time to each letter, except for the last, which is to be sung longer than the others. The first singer sings the recitation, and the second singer sings the response. A silence follows, being continued by the second recitation.

Litany for the Whale. Solo for Voice 52 (Aria No. 2). John Cage Composer. The Theatre of Voices’ collection jumps right in at the deep end with Litany for the Whale (1980), a 25-minute monody with two uncannily similar voices (Alan Bennett and Paul Elliott) using only five notes in antiphonal phrases. Shut your eyes and this ritual could almost be Gregorian chant, austere and liturgical, since there are powerful associations with these voices in early music repertoire.

Cheap Imitation: No. 3, Pt. 1 (Arranged for Guitar). Motet No. 2: O Magnum Mysterium, Pt. 2 (Arranged for Guitar). 1, Veni Sponsa Christi (Arranged for Guitar). Music for Vihuela: Pavana No.
