Pifarély was born in Bègles. In 1979, he began touring with bassist Didier Levallet and guitarist Gérard Marais as a trio. In the 1980s he began leading his own bands, as can be heard on the recording Insula Dulcamara (1988) and Oblique (1992).

In 1988, he produced his first record as a leader, Insula Dulcamara (Nocturne). As a leader, Pifarély splits his time between his quintet - including pianist François Couturier and guitarist Marc Ducret - and a series of duo/trio meetings with musicians including Joachim Kühn, Daniel Humair, Vincent Courtois, Michel Godard, (The Fitting Room, Enja), Stefano Battaglia (Triplicity, Splasc(h)), Rabih Abou Khalil (Yara, Enja), and Portuguese violinist Carlos Zingaro (Icis, In.

He also initiated numerous text/music experiences with french writer François Bon and actors Violaine Schwartz and Pierre Baux.

Paul Klee started painting Insula Dulcamara in 1921, but he did not finish until 1938. It’s an abstract art style painting that was created with oil. Instead of canvas, Klee used printed newspaper on top of burlap as his foundation. In addition to oil he also use colored paste. It’s currently in the Zentrum Paul Klee gallery. Insula Dulcamara is the largest painting created by Klee. It was renamed from Insel der Kalypso to accommodate the statement Klee wanted to make. Klee used symbols, lines, colors and different shapes to create this painting
