They had already dented the mainstream, reaching the Top 10 with "Sweet Home Alabama" in 1974, and picking up a sizable following of Southern rock fans since releasing their 1973 debut. But Street Survivors, released on Oct. 17, 1977, was supposed to catapult them into a whole other realm of rock-star popularity. The year before, they added a guitarist, Steve Gaines, who also sang and wrote. They sharpened their pop hooks, becoming a more soulful group as a result.

Released on October 17, 1977, the original pressing of the cover of the Lynyrd Skynyrd album Street Survivors had a photograph of the band standing in flames. Eerily, Steve Gaines’ (in the middle) eyes were closed and his head appears to be engulfed in the flames. Gaines and Ronnie Van Zant both died tragically in a plane crash three days after the albums release on October 20, 1977. Thirty years later, the deluxe CD version of Street Survivors restored the original flames cover. Another album cover fact which I’m sure it was a sarcastic gesture is Ronnie Van Zant wearing a Neil Young t-shirt on the album cover.
It was released on 2 February 1976, reaching No. 20 on the US albums chart and going gold early in 1981. The album was originally titled ‘Ain’t No Dowd About It’, in tribute to the producer Tom Dowd, whom the band idolised. Now issued on red and yellow burst vinyl, Street Survivors is Lynyrd Skynyrd’s fifth album, which was first issued on 17 October 1977. It is the last album recorded by original members Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins, and is the only band studio recording by guitarist Steve Gaines.
