This builds upon the pop overtures of Faith and turns Hill into a full-fledged diva - something that should be clear from the cover of Breathe, where she's moussed and styled like a supermodel. And Breathe is as bold and brassy as any big pop album, which only makes sense since this is a country album in marketing only: it's an adult contemporary album, as Faith was before it, but where that was a bit of a humble affair, Hill is perfectly comfortable with acting like a star here, belting out songs whether they're rockin'.
Faith Hill is a country singer, but this had massive crossover appeal and got played on a variety of radio formats. Country music launched into the mainstream in the early '90s as "New Country" artists such as Garth Brooks (the first country singer to have an album debut at on the Billboard 200) infused their songs with pop and rock elements. Hill joined the movement with her pop friendly 1998 album Faith and followed up with Breathe. The latter topped both the country and pop albums charts, and the title track was the pop airplay song of 2000
Breathe was a landmark in Faith Hill’s career, making her the biggest country-pop crossover success this side of Shania. Aside from creating the template for countless female country singers to follow, it reveals, in retrospect, just how wide-ranging her talents were: The first couple of cuts overflow with funk and R&B flavors, Bringing out the Elvis is swampy blues-rock, and If I Should Fall Behind is a potent Springsteen cover. Hill’s beguiling way with a country ballad is a given, of course.
