The Hit List is the seventh studio album, and the first cover album by Joan Jett. The album was released in 1990. All of the tracks are covers of famous songs. Dirty Deeds" was released as a 7-inch vinyl single and also cassette single, backed with the non-LP track "Let It Bleed", a cover of The Rolling Stones song. Love Hurts" was released as the second single, backed with "Up from the Skies". Love Hurts" was re-issued in the UK by Chrysalis Records with "Pretty Vacant" as B-side.

Covers can be a waste of time in the hands of some rockers; but they've always worked well for Jett, who's been wise enough to make sure that her own personality never became obscured when recording other artists' material. The one-time member of the criminally neglected Runaways embraces covers exclusively on The Hit List, tackling everything from the Sex Pistols' "Pretty Vacant" to AC/DC's "Dirty Deed" to the Doors' "Love Me Two Times" with spirited, inspired results
