It's a spring day in 2011 and Self Defense Family is at the Bob Marley-founded Tuff Gong Studio in Kingston, Jamaica. On the same day, over 1500 miles north, Self Defense Family is also playing a bar show somewhere in Connecticut. But since joining Deathwish Inc. in 2010 and shortly after releasing their third LP, You Are Beneath Me, they made it obvious that the only rules they were willing to play by were ones they'd set themselves. The previous album even opens up with a manifesto of sorts, giving advice on how to best enjoy the following content. And in reality, I feel guilty about even pointing this out. It's like meeting the coolest girl ever-she's got an amazing personality, no crazy issues, a great body, and cool style, but her face is repulsive. You know should see past it, but you have to be able to look at your partner to really commit, so it's hard to ignore. EOAY is that girl-it's got everything that should matter and the only flaw is superficial, but it's there. Perhaps it just shows how shallow I can be as a listener.

Self Defense Family are releasing a 7-inch on Iron Pier Records in late September where collaborator Caroline Corrigan does vocals in place of frontman Patrick Kindlon. Featuring a feminine changing of the guard, the release is titled You Are Beneath Her as a play on the source material–2010's You Are Beneath Me (Deathwish In. It's Self Defense Family, not Self Deception Family. It's obvious Caroline sings these songs better than I do, admitted Kindlon. We're exclusively premiering said version of Jeni Leigh, which can be heard below.
