First off, this two-disc, 36-track set isn't all ska, in fact, aside for some British ska revival sides, it isn't really much about ska at all, comprising instead mostly random rocksteady, early reggae, and even some dub selections, which makes for a pretty scattershot collection.

The second wave of ska erupted in England via Coventry in the late '70s and early '80s, in the midst of an incredibly fertile post-punk era. The tangents went in so many different directions and produced such lasting, varied sounds that it could now be called a "golden age" for creative music. And the ska revival was a fine moment indeed. You can't find many with an unkind word for the early 2 Tone label works of the Specials, Madness, Selector, the English Beat, Bodysnatchers, Rico, Swinging Cats, and later Bad Manners.

This is an excellent collection of ska songs. While some collections reflect the unfortunate decision to mix 1960s originals with the 1980s revival, this collection sticks to the original performances. The collection starts off with an upbeat kicker, "Shanty Town.
