30 Best Hip-Hop Albums of 2018. This year saw releases from rap’s biggest names, but it still felt like a changing of the guard for the genre. City Girls had their breakout when they appeared on Drake’s Number One hit, In My Feelings. You get the sense, though, that it was just as exciting for him to have them on his song as it was for them to jump on a Drake song. The Miami duo, signed to Atlanta’s Quality Control Music, are a charismatic bunch, and Period puts that on full display. The last time a Southern hip-hop duo released an album as ambitious as this 101-minute psychedelic trap-music exploration, they were called OutKast. Whether Lamborghini-slick ( Powerglide ) or sky-high and sad ( Hurt to Look ), brothers Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi give every song a unique mix of openheartedness and indulgence, without losing the youthful energy that made their first pop-rap hits so addictive.

With a name like The Ultimate Hip Hop Album, this three-disc compilation is already setting itself up for inevitable failure. And sadly, albeit predictably, while there are some good tracks here (Dr. Dre and Ice Cube's "Natural Born Killaz," Nate Dogg and Warren G's "Regulate"), there's a lot of filler here to, both from known artists and unknown.
