L'Arc-en-Ciel ("The Rainbow" in French, stylized as L'Arc~en~Ciel) is a Japanese rock band, founded in Osaka in 1991. With a reported 40 million records sold, they were the first Japanese act to headline at Madison Square Garden. In 2003, they were ranked 58 on a list of the top 100 Japanese pop musicians by HMV Japan. While they first got their start as a visual kei band, they have not had any association with the movement since their major label debut in 1994.

L'arc en Ciel is now nearly 20 years old (wow!) and Awake is their 2005 studio album. I believe this album is probably in their top three, depending on personal taste. I think Kiss is by far the best (2007) but that is my opinion as a long time fan of theirs. But if you had to get two albums, get this and Kiss. L'arc en Ciel has become one of Japan's most known bands internationally thanks to frequent anime intro songs (Fullmetal Alchemist and Gundam 00 come to mind). They are deserving of their international reputation. They are a band that is hard to pin down into any one genre, and their songs are as diverse as their costumes. If you like L'arc en Ciel, check out Hyde's solo album (Hyde) as well as Vamps, Hyde's other band (Beast). His solo project is a bit darker and more influenced by metal and hard rock, almost has an early Soundgarden sound to it.
Awake is the tenth album by L'Arc-en-Ciel, released on June 22, 2005, in Japan and on September 20, 2005, in the United States. The song "Lost Heaven" was used as the ending theme of the Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa film. Studio album by. L'Arc-en-Ciel. June 22, 2005 (JP) September 20, 2005 (US).
