DEPECHE MODE have titled their much-anticipated forthcoming album EXCITER, set for release in late May on Reprise. In the words of songwriter MARTIN GORE, sitting in front of the mixing board at a New York City recording studio: "It still has darkness. But I find it more uplifting. EXCITER signals a new era of creativity for DAVE.

Twenty years into their career, having had to repair themselves after various personal crises, Depeche Mode have no right to sound this fresh and vital. However, Björk producer Mark Bell has encouraged them to experiment while maintaining their instinct for indelible hooks. Whether they’re pairing distorted beats with acoustic guitar loops ( Dream On ), stomping out sci-fi disco ( I Feel Loved ), or unfolding a lulling ballad ( When the Body Sleeps ), Exciter is an exquisite balance of unpredictability and warmth. Exciter Depeche Mode.

It's rare to find bands capable of keeping their own best qualities to the fore while trying something new each time out, but Depeche Mode demonstrate that balance in full on the marvelous Exciter. Arguably the first album made by the group as a cohesive unit since Violator (and bearing some resemblance to that record in overall title and song names - compare "The Sweetest Condition" with "The Sweetest Perfection"), Exciter finds the trio again balancing pop catchiness with experimental depths.

Ultra is the ninth studio album by English electronic music band Depeche Mode. It was released on 14 April 1997 by Mute Records. It was the band's first album following the departure of Alan Wilder, who had become disillusioned with life in the band. Wilder's departure and lead singer Dave Gahan's drug problems, which culminated in a near-fatal overdose, had caused speculation that Depeche Mode was finished.

Reviews (1)
One of the best DM albums. Great sounds, great lyrics, strong songs, how'd they do that production... and the habitual WTF song (or two)... Bit of this, bit of that, but over all a proper ELECTRONIC album from DM. Surround sound disk is super fine in its clarity, this albums made for hearing in 5.1.
