After all, Asleep in the Back is more about getting through and sustaining than it is flat-out moping or asking for a hug. The tempos might not ever exceed mid-level, and half of the songs might exceed five minutes, but the record is anything but a difficult listen or tough to wade through. When the acoustic strumming, piano twinkles, liquid basslines, and muted horns are this engaging and well arranged, it's difficult to wring yourself from the web.

The debut album by UK band Elbow, the record was a minor chart success thanks to singles Red, Powder Blue, Newborn and Asleep In The Back. All 4 singles charted well in the UK, and helped the album to a peak of 14 on the charts and a Gold certification. It also charted in Australia. Garvey offered a track-by-track guide to the record in 2009, during which he says: We’re still incredibly proud of this record. It features Elbow’s most heavily layered, dense sound
