Though in Mistake Mistake Mistake Mistake Jimmy Tamborello (using the moniker James Figurine here) set out to make a minimalist techno album, influenced greatly by German label Kompakt, what he ended up with (and what he freely admits) is much closer to the chno-pop warblings of his other band, the Postal Service. It is perhaps, slightly more club-oriented than anything on Give Up, as there are quite a few pieces that use sparse vocals (or none at all, like in "White Ducks"), including "You Again," whose claim of featuring Jenny Lewis means nothing more.

The result of that learning experience is Mistake Mistake Mistake Mistake, an album of tepid and stylistically muddled techno. It's not as if he's forgotten his bread and butter: "55566688833", the album's first and most memorable track, reworks the Postal Service's springy opulence with Tamborello's own relaxed murmur replacing Gibbard's theatrics. It comes off like Casiotone for the Painfully Alone- droll and charming

Mistake Mistake Mistake Mistake. Jimmy Tamborello, aka Dntel, takes Figurines techno-pop, the more laptop-lo-fi and intricate sensibilities of his Postal Service and minimal house-inspiration from a German trip to create an essential album of quirky electronic twinkle-pop, with an edge and a twist. One of Tamborello's fears has been to never again find a girlfriend and the album basks in this spirit of emotional calvary, with "Leftovers" asking: "Which one of these things could have make you stay?" Heartbreak-kindred Erlend Oye (Kings of Convenience) also makes a most appropriate guest appearance, lending his nerdily reflective deep voice to "All the Way to China". Who knew that emotional navelgazing, with added electronic twitches, could be so melancholically charming? A mistake this album surely isn't. James Figurine - Ruining the Sundays 06:16.
