Who Can I Be Now? (1974–1976) is a box set by David Bowie, released on 23 September 2016, focused on the artist's "American Phase"
In May 1974, David Bowie released his eighth album, Diamond Dogs. But as proved by Who Can I Be Now? – a lavish box set that traces his career from Diamond Dogs to 1976’s masterpiece Station to Station, by way of David Live and the vastly superior Live Nassau Colosseum 1976 – the shift was more convoluted and problematic than it appeared at the time. Most attention has been drawn by the inclusion of The Gouster, a reconstruction of an early version of the album that became Young Americans.

Parlophone Records presents David Bowie: Who Can I Be Now (1974-1976), the second in a series of box sets spanning his career from 1969. The follow up to the awarding winning and critically acclaimed Five Years (1969-1973) will be released in September 2016 and will contain the previously unreleased album from 1974 called The Gouster. The 12 CD/13-piece vinyl sets feature all of the material officially released by Bowie during the so-called ‘American' phase of his career from 1974 to 1976. Exclusive to the box set is The Gouster previously unreleased as a complete album it was recorded at Sigma Sound, Philadelphia in 1974 and produced by Tony Visconti. The album was mixed and mastered before David decamped to New York to work with John Lennon and Harry Maslin on what became the Young Americans album.
As with all of David Bowie’s archival releases, Who Can I Be Now? (1974/1976) is of the highest quality in terms of sound quality and packaging. Speaking of redundant, we have five LPs worth of Bowie’s middling 1974 concert album David Live. Recorded at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia during the Diamond Dogs tour, David Live is a rather listless performance that has never been highly regarded. Bowie himself said of the album that it should really have been titled David Bowie Is Alive and Well and Living Only in Theory.
