Unfortunately bassist Charles Mingus and pianist Cecil Taylor do not actually appear together on this bootleg album but their separate performances apparently both took place at the Half Note on the same night.
Mingus is an album by jazz bassist and composer Charles Mingus. The album was recorded in October and November 1960 in New York for Nat Hentoff's Candid label. At this time Mingus was working regularly with a piano-less quartet featuring Eric Dolphy, Ted Curson and Dannie Richmond, as heard on the Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus album also recorded in November 1960.
Charles Mingus represented many historical styles in his compositions such as. Blues, Gospel, Dixieland, Early Jazz long form, polytonality, Expansion & Contraction of time. Ornette Coleman's Instrument. Cecil Taylor's composition style elements. Motivic Music and cluster chords. Cecil Taylors style influences. 20th Century Classical & Jazz. Cecil Taylor's Jazz influences.
41: Charlie Christian: The Genius Of The Electric Guitar (Columbia). A classically trained pianist, Taylor recorded his first album, Jazz Advance, in 1956 and by the time that he recorded Unit Structures (the first of two albums for Blue Note) ten years later, he had developed his own personalised take on free jazz. And for my money Mingus’ greatest album is The Clown.
