Kojak Variety is a 1995 album by Elvis Costello, composed of cover songs written by others. Costello's rendering of "Days" by The Kinks had previously appeared on the album Until the End of the World, the 1991 soundtrack to Wim Wenders' film of the same name. With Almost Blue, Elvis Costello wanted to be a honky tonker. With Kojak Variety, he's a crooner, picking forgotten tunes by both minor and major artists (anyone from Screamin' Jay Hawkins to Bob Dylan). From his song selections to the amp;B band, Costello doesn't make any obvious moves. Yet that doesn't mean that the record is difficult - it just shows the depths of Costello's affection for music and record collecting (which is also clear from his loving, detailed liner notes).

Elvis Costello had envisioned this album of covers as one that would just magically appear in record shops with no advance publicity, giving it the aura of a lost album. He’d assembled an incredibly accomplished band of session musicians - guitarists James Burton and Marc Ribot, drummers Jim Keltner and Pete Thomas, keyboardist Larry Knetchel, bassist Jerry Scheff - and brought them to Barbados to record these 15 tracks that cover everyone from Bob Dylan ( I Threw It All Away ) to Ray Davies ( Days ), stopping off for a heavy dose of R&B with.
