This was a differnt Cal Tjader recording in that he utilized a large group to create a latin jazz orchestral piece of music. Since the smaller setting of some of his other recordings was not utilized the result is a free form flowing disc that is full of improvisation. The emphasis is not just on Cal's vibes work but rather on the whole ensemble. Undoubtedly many of the big names in latin jazz were probably playing on this disc
Cal Tjader - Gimme Shelter (1971). Very Cool cover of the Stones’ classic - the mix between the vibes and Fender Rhodes creates an eerie tone. Hip Vibrations is an atypic album in the Cal Tjader 60′s discography for Verve in that it focuses on straight Jazz, with very nice arrangements by Benny Golson and Bobby Bryant. You even find the pair Ron Carter - Herbie Hancock featured on some tunes. This one is an easy listening take on the verge on being cheesy of the famous Canto de Ossanha penned by Vinicius de Moraes and Baden Powell.
Callen Radcliffe "Cal" Tjader, Jr. (/ˈtʃeɪdər/ JAY-dər; July 16, 1925 – May 5, 1982) was an American Latin jazz musician, known as the most successful non-Latino Latin musician. He explored other jazz idioms, even as he continued to perform the music of Cuba, the Caribbean, and Latin America for the rest of his life. Tjader played the vibraphone primarily. He was accomplished on the drums, bongos, congas, timpani, and the piano. He worked with many musicians from several cultures.
