A rat king is a collection of rats whose tails are intertwined and bound together by one of several possible mechanisms, such as entangling material like hair or sticky substances like sap or gum. The number of rats joined together varies from a few to as many as 32. Historically, the phenomenon is particularly associated with Germany, which produced many reported instances.

3 has a rich history as a Neutral Milk Hotel song, appearing on several demo tapes (Hype City Soundtrack and Invent Yourself a Shortcake), usually with different names – Up and Over, Up and Over We Go, and Synthetic Flying Machine have all served time as the name for this song. These don’t seem particularly important, unless one knows the origin of Neutral Milk Hotel – before the Olivia Tremor Control was an early group featuring Jeff and the members of the Tremor Control as Synthetic Flying Machine. King Of The Rats was recorded live at Sky Dungeon Studio in Fort Bragg, California in the summer of 2015. It is a B-Side to a full EP which will be released in Winter 2016.

20 copies were made, each hand printed on a risograph by Kelly Brown. The single was released as a promotional item for Bunnymilk's show with Jonathan Richman (The Modern Lovers) at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco on December 6th of 2015.
