The Hondells were a west coast surf/hot rod band in the early 60's that had songs on the Billboard Hot 100 and appeared in several movies like "Beach Blanket Bingo" and "Beach Party". They released several albums on the Mercury label under the name of The Hondells. The main members of the band also played on and released songs as "The Weird-Oh's" and "The Super Stocks". The Hondells were put together by a producer Gary Usher, American Studio Group. It was not a band with a fixed occupation, but rather a product of the ever-changing art studio musicians who came from Los Angeles. The majority of the early songs were composed by Usher and Roger Christian. Both Usher and Christian were at this time co-authors of Beach Boy Brian Wilson. The first album by the band Go Little Honda from 1964 contained titles such as A Guy Without Wheels, Hot Rod High, Death Valley Run, Haulin 'Honda or Black Boots and Bikes. In 1965, the Hondells took on the advertising song You Meet the Nicest People on a Honda for the Japanese company Honda, and thus supported their successful advertising campaign. Frankie and Johnny" (sometimes spelled "Frankie and Johnnie"; also known as "Frankie and Albert" or just "Frankie") is a traditional American popular song. It tells the story of a woman, Frankie, who finds her man Johnny making love to another woman and shoots him dead. Frankie is then arrested; in some versions of the song she is also executed. The Hondells scored another modest hit single in 1966 with a cover of the Lovin' Spoonful song "Younger Girl" (Mercury 72562) before disbanding. Randy Thomas sang the lead. The Hondells also recorded commercials for Pepsi and Coty Cosmetics. Musicians on these recordings were Ritchie Burns, Glen Campbell, Wayne Edwards, Dennis McCarthy, Randy Thomas, who sang the lead on the Pepsi commercial and Al Ferguson who sang the lead on the Coty commercial. Aside from "Little Honda", most of the songs were written by Usher and KFWB disc jockey and lyricist Roger Christian.
