Boy is the debut studio album by Irish rock band U2. It was released on 20 October 1980 by Island Records and was produced by Steve Lillywhite. Boy contains many songs from the band's 40-song catalogue at the time, including two tracks that were re-recorded from their original versions on their debut release, the EP Three. Boy was recorded from July to September 1980 at Dublin's Windmill Lane Studios, which became U2's chosen recording location during the 1980s.
Boy was voted Best Album, Best Debut Album, and Best Album Sleeve in the Hot Press Irish National Poll Results. It peaked at No. 52 on the UK album charts and No. 63 on the US album charts. In the US, it was certified platinum by the RIAA. Release Date: 20 октября, 1980. Produced By: Steve Lillywhite. What we were looking for in Boy was a sort of cinema sound, panavision - really textured and big, like a huge screen in a cinema. Going back through the early stuff, nothing really horrified me.
The songs may occasionally show some weakness - the driving "I Will Follow," the dark "An Cat Dubh," and the shimmering "The Ocean" stand out among the sonic textures - yet the band's musical and lyrical vision keep Boy compelling until the finish.
Boy was U2’s first commercially released full length album. The album was recorded in 1980 in Dublin. Originally U2 had approached Martin Hannett, who produced 11 O’Clock Tick Tock, to produce the Boy album as well. The album was recorded at Windmill Lane, and some songs were written and recorded in the studio, while others had been a staple of live performances for years. New versions of Out of Control, Stories for Boys, and Twilight were recorded for inclusion on the album instead of relying on earlier recorded versions released on singles. Most of the recording took place in July – September 1980.

The boy on the cover was a kid who lived across the street in front of Bono’s house in Dublin named Peter Rowen. Peter later became skate-board champion of Ireland, works in a skate-board shop and has also had various acting parts, notably in the movie The Commitments. Here is the North American cover for Boy.
