But of course, Grace Jones is the star here. Five of the original album’s nine songs are covers, though rather than fealty to the source material, Jones sounds as if she’s shredding the songbook with her bare teeth. She treats each cover not as a singer tackling a song, but as an actor inhabiting the skin of a role. She sneers the Police ’s Demolition Man as if she's a villainess leveling a hospital, inverting the gender and notions of sexual dominance in her lascivious take on Bill Withers’ Use Me. Dubbing out the zombiefied pacing of Nightclubbing, Jones intones Iggy Pop ’s lines.
Nightclubbing is definitely Grace's best studio album. There are so many classic tracks here to tickle your ears. Pull Up To The Bumper trucks along with car horns and a scratchy hook. Feel Up, consisting of upbeat African rhythms is one of the best here. Walking In The Rain has Grace speaking in deep intonation "Feeling like a woman, looking like a ma. And then there's the showstopper Nightclubbing. The cover is definitely very strong. There is no middle ground. I never really listened to Grace Jones back when she was popular.
The sound blended genres of punk, raggae, and new wave, coming together as thick, murky concoction that paved the way for Nightclubbing - an album that took those newly-introduced ideas a step further to bring about what was undoubtedly her finest hour. The album strikes even prior to its music - its iconic cover art, a painted photograph by Jones' longtime collaborator (and-then boyfriend) Jean-Paul Goude portrays her in a fierce, stark, almost impossibly sharp smolder
