Johann Sebastian Bach St Matthew Passion, BWV244. Werner Güra (Evangelist), Johannes Weisser (Christus), Sunhae Im, Christina Roterberg (sopranos), Bernarda Fink, Marie-Claude Chappuis (altos), Topi Lehtipuu, Fabio Trümpy (tenors) & Konstantin Wolff, Artuu Kataja (basses) Staats- und Domchor Berlin, RIAS Kammerchor & Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, René Jacobs.

Following acclaimed live performances in Paris and Berlin, Jacobs conducts the RIAS Kammerchor & Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, with several of the same soloists (soprano Sunhae Im, tenor Werner Güra and baritone Johannes Weisser) he used for his St Matthew Passion recording two years ago, a set which was praised for its 'overwhelming sincerity' ( The Guardian). 'spatial innovations' (The Sunday Times) and 'magnificent vocal presence' (Gramophone)

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750): Matthäus-Passion: 1 Erster Teil, 1. Chorus I & II Kommt, ihr Töchter, helft mir klagen 08:31. 2 Erster Teil, 2. Evangelista, Jesus Da Jesus diese Rede vollendet hatte 00:39. Werner Güra, tenor Johannes Weisser, baritone Sunhae Im, soprano Bernarda Fink, mezzo-soprano Topi Lehtipuu, tenor Konstantin Wolff, baritone Staats- und Domchor Berlin RIAS Kammerchor Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin Rene Jacobs, direction. The RIAS Kammerchor was founded by RIAS (Radio in the American Sector) in Berlin on 15 October 1948. Recordings for the broadcasting station's needs determined the choir's work during its first 25 years under Karl Ristenpart, Herbert Froitzheim and Günther Arndt. With the increasing availability of recorded audio media, the importance of public concerts and guest performances grew.

Sunhae Im, Christina Roterberg, Bernada Fink, Marie-Claude Chappuis, Werner Güre, Topi Lehtipuu, Fabio Trümpy, Johannes Weisser, Konstantin Wolff, Arttu Kataja; RIAS Kammerchor; Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin/ René Jacobs. Label: Harmonia Mundi. Headed by Werner Güra’s dynamic Evangelist and Bernarda Fink’s beautifully coloured ‘Erbarme dich’, the solo singing is compelling throughout. The crowd scenes are bloodcurdling, the playing revelatory; only Jacobs’s urgency sometimes gets the better of him, torpedoing music (such as the final chorus) that would benefit from a little more room to breath.

Akademie für Alte Musik Beriln. RIAS Kammerchor – Sunhae Im soprano. An opportunity to rediscover a key work by Johann Sebastian Bach, as interpreted by René Jacobs. In this, his most imposing score, Bach composed one of the most poignant works in existence, one that explores human suffering, in all its aspects, in great depth. The interpretation offered by René Jacobs reveals the full scope of this timeless work of art.

Saint Matthew Passion, BWV 244 by Johann Sebastian Bach Performer: Fabio Trumpy (Tenor), Werner Güra (Tenor), Bernarda Fink (Mezzo Soprano), Topi Lehtipuu (Tenor), Konstantin Wolff (Baritone) Conductor: René Jacobs Orchestra/Ensemble: Berlin RIAS Chamber Chorus, Academy for Ancient Music Berlin, Berlin State And Cathedral Choir Period: Baroque Written: Circa 1727; Leipzig, Germany. The RIAS Kammerchor and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin deliver majestic performances of the choruses in authentic period style, and tenor Werner Güra as the Evangelist and bass Johannes Weisser as Jesus are well-matched in their fluid vocal quality and intense dramatic feeling. But the whole feels much greater than the sum of its parts, and the experience of hearing this extraordinary performance is overwhelming, both intellectually and emotionally.
