Maybes and Sketch on Glass aren't always sunny, but they're playful, dreamy, and melancholic- refreshing qualities to hear in dubstep, a genre slightly less emotionally versatile than hair metal. Even Burial- its most expressive, articulate producer- works in a kind of greyscale compared to Mount Kimbie (though, to be fair, Burial's music reaches a depth that Mount Kimbie's doesn't, and probably isn't aiming for)
Sketch on Glass is an EP by UK electronic duo Mount Kimbie, released in August 2009 through Hotflush Recordings. It received praise from critics. Resident Advisor noted a number of "brave new directions displayed here" and wrote that the duo "refuse to lean on the midrange bassline or any kind of half-step drum pattern and they never, ever, stop experimenting.

After Mount Kimbie had started in 2008, a year later saw the release of two well-received ep’s: ‘Maybes’ and ‘Sketch On Glass’ (both 2009). The latter being released severe months later thus gathered slightly more praise from critics for being more funkier and groovier, a deeper bass, higher bpm and use of sampled vocals than it’s predecessor (more like a five minute elder twin sibling, actually). Sketch on Glass EP (2009). Album by Mount Kimbie.
Mount Kimbie are in a genre all of their own. Where Maybes showcased their ability to write lush, downtempo (mostly) instrumentals, gradually adding layers of melody and wonderment, Sketch on Glass proves the duo also know how to bring the party – crafting another EP of inventiveness and creativity, but this time with more of a focus on bass and groove. Mount Kimbie continues to break barriers in new and exciting ways, while still establishing a clear sound and vision. Part of their appeal is their experimentation, sure. But to say that the duo has no personality or qualities besides that is flat out wrong.
