Johnny Devlin was New Zealand's first Rock'n'Roll star. He grew up in Wanganui but moved to Auckland where he was discovered by promoter Dave Dunningham, who passed him on to Phil Warren, who signed him to his Prestige label in 1958. Over the next two years he was reputed to have sold over 200,000 singles (although this may be somewhat inflated by Warren's hype) and he was mobbed all over the nation.

The book of love is long and boring No one can lift the damn thing Its full of charts and facts, and figures And instructions for dancing. And I I love it when you read to me And you You can read me anything. The book of love has music in it In fact that's where music comes from Some of it's just transcendental Some of it's just really dumb. And I I love it when you sing to me And you You can sing me anything (yeah) You can sing me anything. James first covered the song during the recording of his live album Live At Whelans, and then subsequently released his take globally to critical acclaim. The timeless song reflects on dual trivalty and essentialness we attribute to love. The Book of Love" Track Info. Written By Stephin Merritt. Composed by Stephin Merritt.
