Wound healing is a complex process that normally occurs in the postnatal setting through scar tissue formation, with regenerative healing limited to the liver and bone. In contrast, the fetus in the mild-gestational period heals cutaneous wounds without scarring by regeneration of the normal dermal architecture, including restoration of dermal appendages and neurovasculature, in all mammalian species. Limb regeneration is one of the best examples of organ/appendage regeneration in vertebrates and has been called epimorphosis or epimorphic regeneration since it requires blastema formation and proliferation.
