Dames at Sea is a musical with book and lyrics by George Haimsohn and Robin Miller and music by Jim Wise. The musical is a parody of large, flashy 1930s Busby Berkeley-style movie musicals in which a chorus girl, newly arrived off the bus from the Midwest to New York City, steps into a role on Broadway and becomes a star.
Off Broadway is an American rock band founded by Paul Darrow, Cliff Johnson, Paul McDermott, John Pazdan and Dan Santercola in 1977 in Oak Park, Illinois.
Dames at Sea. by Jim Wise, George Haimsohn, Robin Miller. A long-running hit Off Broadway that brought stardom to Bernadette Peters, this campy show is based on the nostalgia of Hollywood musicals of the '30s. It's big-time New York, into which sweet little Ruby from faraway Hometown, . has come to make it big on Broadway. Who should she chance to meet but another boy from Hometown, . Dick, a sailor, who also has ambitions as a songwriter.
The cast on this newly reissued recording, from a 1989 revival in England, certainly captures the youthful, lighthearted exuberance of the show’s crazy story and delightful music. But for several important reasons, this version pales in comparison to the 1969 original cast recording on Sony. Although the minimalist orchestrations for this revival may be closer to the original show, those of Jonathan Tunick for the original cast album are much zippier and more full-flavored without being overbearing. George Haimsohn, Robin Miller (book & lyrics); Jim Wise (music) -. Sandra Dickinson Brian Cant Josephine Blake. Newton, Malcolm (conductor).
The original production of Dames at Sea opened off-off-Broadway in 1966 at the Caffe Cino, before moving to off-Broadway's Bouwerie Lane Theatre in 1968. It transferred to the Theater de Lys (now the Lucille Lortel) in 1969, before launching a run in London's West End. The New York productions launched the career of young Bernadette Peters, who received a Drama Desk Award nomination of her performance as Ruby.
Dames at Sea' was originally a micro-budget stage musical that affectionately guyed the big-budget Warners musicals directed by Busby Berkeley in the 1930s. The tiny off-off-Broadway musical had the good luck to cast the mega-talented Bernadette Peters in her star-making role. I didn't see the original stage production, but I've seen some amateur and stock versions in addition to this television special.
