Back in November we premiered Everlastingly Yours, the first proper single from a new UK indie supergroup called Piroshka. The band - which features Lush’s Miki Berenyi backed by Moose’s KJ McKillop, Modern English’s Mick Conroy, and Elastica’s Justin Welch - will release their debut album Brickbat next month. Today they’re sharing its second single, What’s Next? It rides an ever-growing wave of synth noise to some rewarding destinations. Brickbat is out 2/15 on Bella Union.

The bouncy nature of Never Enough is immediately punctuated by the bitter, mechanical ruminations of Blameless, while the plosive urgency of What’s Next is only highlighted further by the soft lamentations of Heartbeats. It is this sense of contrast, beautifully rendered, that keeps the album intriguing and contagious. There is always the danger that records like this can feel stale, even irrelevant. Brickbat’ avoids this through Berenyi’s poetic writing about the modern world.

The album is named after the word for a missile, which nails the record's heavyweight lyrics if not the music's gorgeous, bittersweet and euphoric pop. Think of Brickbat as a wolf in sheep's clothing - which suits the name Piroshka, the Hungarian take on the wolf-terrorised fairytale hero Little Red Riding Hood - a subtle nod, too, to a certain red hairdo that stood out in the 1990s Brit-guitar-pop scen. .
