Afternoon tea, that most quintessential of English customs is, perhaps surprisingly, a relatively new tradition. Whilst the custom of drinking tea dates back to the third millennium BC in China and was popularised in England during the 1660s by King Charles II and his wife the Portuguese Infanta Catherine de Braganza, it was not until the mid 19th century that the concept of ‘afternoon tea’ first appeared. Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o’clock in the afternoon

Five-o-clock was first used in 1840 by the Duchess of Bedford Anna, the maid of honor of Queen Victoria. In those years the Tea Party occurred in 4 hours, so the ceremony was called the four-o-clock. In the 20th century tea time was moved for one hour. So there was an afternoon tea. This time is aimed not only to satisfy ones hunger, but an excellent way to spend a secular meeting in England. The British have their lunch at about 1-2 o’clock pm. Afternoon tea is called high tea, meaning the amount of food . So you can see that the tea breaks in England is quite logical and natural, they are caused by hunger arising between meals. It’s also a good excuse to relax a little and lift your mood.
