Pick a Dub is a 1974 album by Jamaican producer and musician Keith Hudson. Critically well received, it is widely regarded as an important work in the dub music genre which evolved out of reggae. Featuring remixes of earlier material, it focuses on heavy drums and bass guitar, with echoing vocals to underscore the intense percussive rhythm. Carlton and Aston Barrett and Augustus Pablo contributed music, while vocal fragments include Hudson, Horace Andy and Big Youth.

From liner notes: Track 1, "Pick A Dub", the riddim was previously used by Keith Hudson for "We Will Make It Up". Track 2, "Black heart" was originally used for "Fight On, Fight On" and "True To My Heart". Track 4, "Don't Move" is based on Keith Hudson's previously unreleased track "Be Still", a version of a song originally recorded in 1962 by Derrick Morgan. Tracks 7 and 18, "In The Rain", was first recorded by The Dramatics in 1972

In fact, coming as early as it did in the development of dub - it was originally released in 1974 - Pick a Dub is a seminal work, a landmark in progressive remixing on a par with early King Tubby, Augustus Pablo, and Rupie Edwards. What makes this record so scintillating is the intensity of the bass and drums, as well as Hudson's relatively naked production. There are not a lot of goofy sound effects and studio screwing around, just buckets of blood and sweat all rolled into a seductive slab of percussive heaviness that will rattle every filling in your head.

Wow what an album. You can certainly hear how jungle, drum and bass and rave owe a great deal of thanks to the genre and Keith Hudson and all associated.

...too bad the LP pressing doesn't include the liner notes include with the CD reissue that VP did around the same time...

compared the sound with the BLOOD & FIRE pressing, which sounds definitely way better in terms of sound quality, richness of frequencies etc. ESPECIALLY the volume/punch of the bass-lines has been lowered/neutralised on the VP pressing ... but the extra disc makes it a great version

Indeed! Saw the VP vinyl only in 2018 and purchased because of the bonus tracks (several of which are on other compilations). I bought the UK Atra LP back in the day and (that's 1975) and it crushes this reissue. BAF must have used an Atra original vinyl (well-pressed by the same plant that made the early UK Virgin vinyls). In the case an original production master was used for the VP reissue (certainly not the case with all the bonus LP tracks), it had lost the magic so many decades later. Ageing tapes loose both the deep bass and the shimmering treble, which is the case here. But this will only be apparent t if having another issue to compare with. So I agree, still a worthwhile reissue.

Don't have an original or the Blood And Fire reissue on vinyl but this version rules over he 90's CD cut. Such an amazing record.
